Freeride / Gravity Riding
Steamboat Springs is evolving fast as a destination for Freeriding.
USFS Partnership
Prompted by the emergence of renegade freeride trails on US Forest Service land the USFS has reached out to RCR to create a partnership for the responsible development of sustainable system trails. This will include :
- Creation of an area master plan for all trails incorporating all exisiting trails and charting the logical development of new trails to create a cohesive trails network.
- Where possible the improvement and adoption of non-sanctioned (renegade) trails.
- Development of sustainable trail maintenance policies
- Development of consistent trail design standards for cross country, freeride and adaptive cycling uses.
Steamboat Ski Mountain Trails
Prompted by RCR the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation began discussions in Summer 2009 to look at new trail development on the ski mountain which would include direcional trails for freeride use. A new Trails Master Plan is in development and public process on this looks likely to happen in Spring 2010. Zones for freeride trails have been outlined and new trail construction could begin as early as Spring 2010. A freeride bike park is also under consideration as this has proven to be a significant draw in other mountain communities such as Whister, BC.
